Hi all. In case you're wondering why BeerRiot has been down most of today - it's a hardware problem. Something about faulty drives on the machine hosting my VPS, which keeps throwing things into read-only mode.

As I sit here enjoying a home-brewed wine (!) that my parents made last fall (great, guys, by the way!), I'm reminded of a thought I had a few days ago, reinforced at yesterday's NERAX North event. I was reading a piece in the New York Times about cask-conditioned ale, when I noticed that the piece was written by their wine reviewer.

...I'm still alive and plugging away at BeerRiot code. I thought you all might just like to hear that despite the fact that I haven't made a post here in a while, or updated the news section on the site, development is far from dead. There are things in the works, and I hope they will be ready soon.

Wait! Before you skip this post thinking that I'm just another "tree hugger" ranting about saving the planet, I want to tell you that I'm going to divide this post into two parts. The first part will be reasons you should drink green that only affect your enjoyment of the beer. Only the second part will be about why drinking in this manner also saves the planet. I'll let you know before the switch.

I bet there are a lot of people still questioning the utility of hot code loading. Especially in the web app field, it can seem a little gratuitous. PHP apps don't need any special hot load facility - the script just gets reread from disk every once in a while.

Hi All. Just a quick post - I forgot to mention that I'm in Northern Nowhere this week. So, like two weeks ago, if administration is slow, it's because I can't get to the internet. :P

Yes, I promised new things well over a week ago. My excuse is that I picked up a cold during my trip to the Middle of Nowhere that took me out of commission for a solid week. :P But, now that that is over...

I just wanted to warn all those interested that admining will likely be slower than usual this weekend. I have to make a trip to the middle of nowhere. The only internet connection I'm likely to have will be in my hotel room. Even there, I'm rather worried that the connection will be so awful that I won't be able to handle anything but the simplest tasks.

Night of the Lagers was awesome. There were quite a few beers there that really did break from the stereotype of Fizzy Yellow Water (tm). In particular, I'd call attention to The Tap's Pilsnaah - really a great example of what I think a pilsner-style beer should be.

Alas, BeerAdvocate's American Beer Fest is upon us. If you haven't bought your ticket yet, get out there and find one. I know a lot of people like to joke about the quality of American beer, but these fests really prove that the joke is only funny to those that don't know anything about beer. We really produce some wicked good beer here.

It was one of my first decisions, and it resulted in one of the first feature requests submitted. BeerRiot does not acknowledge "style" as an intrinsic property of beer. Beers are not classified by any of the terms people toss about in relation to beer today.

Hello Rioters! I realized there was a lot more I wanted to say about developing BeerRiot, enjoying beer, and other things, none of which quite fit under the category "news." So, I've set up this blog as an outlet for those things.
