WI Rustic Roads: Lincoln County, R78

Published Thursday, January 26, 2023 by Bryan

Today's Rustic Roads video is a short one. Lincoln County has just one rustic road: R78. It starts out paved, but quickly shifts to gravel. Along the gravel is a neat cut through a rocky hillside, and a small bridge over the New Wood River, just upstream from where it flows into the Wisconsin.

I didn't spend a lot of time exploring this area. R78 was sort of "one last stop" on an already long day. However, on my way there, I stopped at the 45 x 90 Geographical Marker near Poniatowski. I know, that's not Lincoln County, but Marathon County doesn't have any Rustic Roads, so it's not going to get a mention otherwise. The site is a nice place to stretch your legs, with a short walk out to the marker and some interpretive signage to explain what's up.

A tall, black motorcycle stands in front of a sign reading, 'Welcome To The 45°N - 90°W Geographical Marker'. Behind the sign is a split rail fence and a green field beneath a blue, partly cloudy ski.
